Occasional musings upon the noble game.

Played variably.

Written consistently poorly.

An Open Letter To The Owners Of Chester City FC

Posted by Nik Myles on Monday, October 5, 2009, In : News From Other Places

Things at Chester City don't seem to be getting any better. Yesterday The Non-League Paper reported that the club may have just weeks to live and, if the accounts posted on the club’s website last week are anything to go by, the problems may be slightly more pressing than those facing Pompey right now. Chester supporters have come together in a bid to try an establish what on earth actually is going on at their club, and an open letter to those running the club is reprinted below...

Pauline England RIP

Posted by Nik Myles on Sunday, October 4, 2009, In : News From Other Places
It is odd that someone I never knowingly met, who's very existence was as much of a surprise to me as her untimely passing, should move me to post. But such is life.

By all accounts, Pauline England pretty much epitomised the spirit of FCUM. And, by default, epitomised the spirit of non-league football. A tireless volunteer for her club, she appears to have seen football as something to be shared. The support of her team did not preclude generosity to, and support of, her riva...

Paint pranksters strike football club

Posted by Nik Myles on Thursday, October 1, 2009, In : News From Other Places
Taken from The Western Mercury (including the poor puns):

Line-painting jokers have taken a shot at a football club by drawing a giant penis on its pitch.

A phallus with two massive testicles adorned Worle FC's Station Road ground on Monday morning after the artful pranksters struck.

Worle FC assistant manager Mark Chesney said the club had locked its line painter away for the weekend, so somebody must have brought their own to the ground.

He said: "We reckon it was a jealous playe...

Is anyone getting bored yet?

Posted by Nik Myles on Saturday, June 27, 2009, In : News From Other Places
As mentioned elsewhere in this blog, when they come to write the history of the summer of 2009 in non league football, it will be littered with tales of clubs dicing with death. Some survived, some didn't. Only time will tell if Farsley Celtic will add their names to the list of the fortunate or the not-so-fortunate. The Blue Square North club were playing with the big boys the Conference only two years ago, following a rush of promotions. And now, in a tale that is all too familiar, they are...

Mossley - On The Brink. Of Something

Posted by Nik Myles on Thursday, June 11, 2009, In : News From Other Places
I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to post much during the close season, and I think we can all agree I've been fairly true to my word on that. However, just cos there's no football for me to watch, that does not mean there are no football clubs for me to watch.

This off-season appears to have seen more uncertainty about where clubs will be playing, who they'll be playing, and indeed whether they'll be playing at all, than any other I can remember. Maybe it's just that I am more clued up, I do...

Subbed For Swearing

Posted by Nik Myles on Thursday, March 19, 2009, In : News From Other Places
Carshalton Athletic. Not a name that I have considered very often, I'll be honest. But then this story came to my attention:

In a recent game a CAFC player was substituted from the pitch for continued and excessive use of foul language. The substitution may not have been in the interests of winning the game, but it was in the greater interest of the Club itself and those spectators at the game. Such action has the full support of the club and the overwhelming majority of fans.

Foo...
