In the course of trawling through my reader feeds, I happened upon this article from The Guardian recalling the Vancouver Whitecaps. Not something that would usually grip my imagination, but the tale of the 1979 NASL Championship game is one which surely deserves greater examination. The bare facts, as ripped from that article, are a game of 3 1/2 hrs, two penalty shoot outs, a disallowed goal, player protests and laughably weak refereeing. But my ammended version doesn't do the tale justice. Read it. And weep that football isn't like this any more.
